What Should We Know About Laying Laminate Flooring
Adaptation
A good craftsman should begin by acclimatizing the laminate flooring to the room where it will be installed.
Unopened packages should be laid flat on the floor for at least 48 hours. This allows the laminate to adjust
to the temperature and humidity of the room, preventing warping and expansion after installation.
Preparation
A skilled craftsman must ensure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Any dirt or debris can lead to issues
such as uneven surfaces or potential damage to the laminate. If necessary, the floor should be leveled using
a suitable compound. The right tools are essential; a laminate flooring installation kit, a measuring tape, a utility
knife, and a saw for cutting the laminate to fit are indispensable.
Installation
Planning the layout is crucial. Typically, laying the boards parallel to the longest wall enhances the room’s appearance.
If the laminate doesn't come with an attached underpad, a separate underlayment should be placed for sound
absorption and to prevent moisture from rising.
Starting from the left corner, spacers should be used to maintain a 30.48cm expansion gap between the walls and the planks,
allowing the laminate to expand and contract smoothly.
Planks should be staggered at least 0.635cm apart from any adjacent row to ensure durability and visual appeal.
The modern click-and-lock system simplifies the installation, making it glue-free. Planks should be carefully angled and
clicked into place, using a tapping block if necessary.
Finishing Up
The final row may need trimming to fit. Once all planks are laid, spacers should be removed, and transition pieces installed
at doorways or where the laminate meets other flooring types.
Baseboards or quarter-round molding should be installed to
cover the expansion gap, ensuring they are nailed to the wall, not the flooring.
Post-Installation
After installation, the floor should be cleaned with a soft broom or a slightly damp mop, avoiding excessive water that can damage
the laminate.
The room should be well-ventilated for at least 24 hours to allow any fumes from adhesives to dissipate.
By adhering to these guidelines, a craftsman can ensure a successful and durable installation of laminate flooring,
highlighting their skill and attention to detail in creating a beautifully finished floor.
